k Usée de Munich ne dit rien d'affirmatif à ce sujet : il se
rno à le faire remonter au ixe siècle, au moins; si nous
^°'isultons l'étrangeté et le caractère des ornements sculptés
^ nt il est couvert, nous ne voyons rien d'impossible à cela. —
remarquera que l'armature du coffret est en bronze doré,
'e reste en plaques d'ivoire sculptées d'entrelacs et d'ani-
ma«x fantastiques.

We are not absolutely certain that tbis curions and valuable
coffer belongs to scandinavian art. The catalogue of the Munich
muséum contains nothing positive on this subject : it merely
asserts that the coffer is, at the vory latest, of tho ninth century.
If we judge by the strangeness and the character of the sculp-
tured ornaments with vvliich it is covered, the date does not
seem at ail impossible. The metal-work of the coffret is gilt
bronze, and the mounting consists of plates of ivory sculptured
with arabesques and fantastic animais.
