XVIe SIÈCLE. — orfèvrerie française. COFFRET EN BRONZE
(époque de henri ii.) grandeur de l'exécution.

Dans ce coffret de forme elliptique, la duchesse de Valentinois
n'entre pour rien : le chiffre si fréquemment répété que l'on
voit au milieu d'entrelacs ingénieux, est bien celui de Henri II
et de la reine Catherine. Nul doute à ce sujet; ce sont des C et
non des D qui s'adaptent à l'H royal, et nous pensons que l'on
a généralement mal vu, lorsque dans tous les chiffres officiels,
sculptés peints ou gravés sous le règne de Henri H, on a cru
voir les initiales de Diane de Poitiers mêlés à ceux du roi. Le
château d'Anet seul offre, croyons-nous, des exemples du con-
traire. — La royauté savait encore assez se respecter pour ne
pas afficher, ailleurs que dans la demeure même de la favorite,
une liaison que peu de personnes ignoraient.

In this elliptical shaped casket, the Duxhess of Valentinois
lias no concern, the monogram so frequently repeated, placed
in the middle of clover « entrelacs », is really that of Henry II.
and queen Catherine. There can be no doubt; they are C's,
and not D's, which are combined with the royal H, and we
think that those persons labour under a mistake, who fancy
that the officiai monograms, wether painted, sculptured, or
engraved, under the reign of Henry II., are the initiais of
Diana of Poitiers blended with those of the king. The Château
of Anet alone, in our judgment, offers osamples to the contrary.
—Royalty still had sufficient self-respect not to parade elsewhere
than in the very résidence of the favourite, a connexion that
was known to almost every body.
