ADDENDA,

To the FIRST LECTURE,

TT feems to be a very natural progrefs of the
Arts, which is ufually given us by ancient
writers on the fubject; i.e. that its firft at-
tempts juft ferved to reprefent the dimenfians
of figures, of whatever nature, by a fingle out-
line only •> which manner was properly de-
nominated Sciagraphi a*. The repetition of
lines by way of fhadowing, was the next ftep
in Defign; this gave a kind of relievo, but was
not fufficiently expreftive to fuperfede the ne-
ceffity of infcribing on the piece the name of
the fubject intended. This manner was called
Graphice. To fill up thefe outlines with
colors laid on equally over the picture, was
fir ft attempted by Cleophantus of Corinth,
whofe performances were accordingly named
Monochromata (one-color'd pictures.) From
the ufe of one color, to that of many, was not
a very difficult tranfition. The obfervations
of all, who took the trouble to obferve, in-
formed them of the folds in draperies, and
