Peschwitza zachęca, podobnie jak osoba ich twórcy, do uważnej penetra-
cji sztuki barokowego Gdańska, obfitującego w dalsze nie odkryte po-
lonica.

Summary
Gdańsk contributed greatly to the culture of Polish Baroque in both artistic
and literary fields. One characteristic phenomenon of that period were vivid
festivities organized on the occasion of entries and ceremonial greetings to the
most prominent pensons of the country. Theatre performances and fireworks lent
luster to those ingresses, as well as the appropriate literature, and even especially
designed decorative architecture, as, for example, splendid triumphal arches (their
images preserved on the engravings from Gdańsk) which added to the splendour
of those ceremonies.
Triumphal arches, which were inseparable parts of the ceremonies of wel-
come and political allusions which were of a local character expressed moods
of the society. Magnificently designed triumphal arches created under Gdańsk
patronage fulfilled all those requirements. The eruditional and ideological message
suggest that programs were supervised by experienced masters of symbolics and
of the emblematic literature of the times.
A man who become recognized in this field, although little evidence of his
activities is recorded in literature, was Gdańsk pätritlian, scholar and poet, author
of many epitaph inscriptions, councillor and finały mayor of Gdańsk, Gottfried
Peschwitz (10311-1696). His partially preserved manuscript is now in the library
of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk (sign. Ms,. 2442). In this manuscript
we can find among many short topical compositions, two important polonica:
emblematic designs of decoration for King Michał Korybu't Wiśniowiecki and for
King Jan III Soibieskii.,
Especially worth considering is the second polonicum, an unpublished series
of twenty two drawings. The series consists of designs of a medal on the oc-
casion otf Sobieslkiis election. In addition there were designs of a panegyrical print
with a title page and four decorative drawings, which were to decorate the text
and a fragment of a triumphal arch with fourteen emblematic panneaux. The
design of the medal and the illustration for the print were created in 1674 while
the design of the arch was created ih 16OT7 — the year of the King’s ingress to
the town.
This set of drawings is interesting because of its symbolic contents and the
problem of authorship. Some of the drawings have signatures, while others allow
us to state same attriibutional hypothesis. Some signatures appeared as a mono-
gram H D, as the entire name Hin. Duwen, or Henryk Duwen, which presumably
refer to an unknown artist. This artist was probably a son of Daniel Duwen (Du-
wens? Duben?), a portrait painter of Dutch origin who worked in Gdańsk during
the middle of the seventeenth century»
Heriryk Duwen’s drawings (designs of the medal and the illustrations) repre-
