KRONIKA NAUKOWA
THIRD EXHIBITION OF FOREIGN PUBLICATIONS PURCHASED FOR THE
INSTITUTE OF ART LIBRARY
In all, about lOOObooks, exhibition catalogues and perio-
dicals are presented in this third successive exhibition of new,
non-Polish publications donated by mainly American founda-
tions, and especially the Paul Getty Trust, to the Library of the
Institute of Art in the Polish Academy of Sciences. The
overwhelming majority of these publications are quite new,
some of these - as is also the case in exhibitions currently
running in New York, Paris, Mantua and Florence - having
been brought out as recently as several weeks ago. It is thus
possible to browse through all aspects of the most recent
investigations being carried out in the arts and the latest
achievements in conservation, museum work as well as by
contemporary artists. Every field of art and each artistic period
with suitably laid out accents arising from investigations
carried out in Pol and are represented here.
The Institute’s purchasing programme has also included less
recent publications, such as books, encyclopaedias and graphical
corpuses, as well as periodicals, which could not be acquired in
the 1980s as a result of the political situation. It is for this reason
that numerous volumes of both Hollstein series, completely out
of bounds to all Warsaw libraries until now, are presented next
to the latest volumes of The Illustrated Bartch, as well as current
editions of Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae,
Enciclopedia delTarte medievale, Saur Allgemeines
Kiinstlerlexicon, andacomplete Enciclopedia Storico Nobiliare
Italiana by Vittorio Spreti reprinted in 1981. Included in the
newest monographs of artists are, among others, those of Hans
Memling, Paolo Uccello, Amadeo Modgiliani and the Kossaks.
Studies on the cathedrals at Chartres and Reims are to be found
among numerous publications devoted to great architectural
monuments, as well as older publications such as those by
Helmut Wohl on Domenico Veneziano or Paul Hetherington’s
monograph on Piętro Cavallini, which remain to this day unsur-
passed. On the other hand, a much sought after collection of
studies devoted to Federico Zeri, or the complete Memoria
dell’anticonell’arte italiana from the mid-1980smay be found
in the newest Festschriften and materials arising from various
symposia. Finally, among the great selection of the latest
periodical issues, the "Antichita Viva" and "Daidalos" may be
sought out almost as a complete set or in great variety.
There is no doubt that the publications on show reflect to
a greater extent than previous exhibitions the increasingly
interdisciplinary character of research in the arts. In addition,
there is a greater number of publications from the fields of
film, the history of photography, musie, theatre and the history
of literaturę. It should be said that a series of very important
corpuses and monographs, including Corpus of Rembrandt
Painting, the book of Gaudenz Frauler on Bartolo di Fredi as
well as the catalogues of various collections, have not been
purchased by the Institute in fuli awareness of the fact that
they have been acquired by other Warsaw libraries, including
the National Museum and Art Historians’ Association, with
which for yearsIS PAN hasbeen cooperatingin theprocuring
of foreign publications.
The awarding of further grants for the purchasing of
books, periodicals and microfiche for the IS PAN Library
coincided with an extremely important event in the history of
Polish art history and culture: professor Karolina Lanckoroń-
ska’s gift of about 130 superb paintings for the royal castles
at Warsaw and Kraków. It will be possible, thanks to the
publications presented in this hall, to carry out comprehesive
studies of the donated works of such masters as Rembrandt,
