Konstanty and Jarosław Wojciechowski: two generations and two approaches to Historicism 109

building of clearly modernist expression (1911-12).
This building is one of the most important works of
early modernism in Polish architecture. The creative
road of J. Wojciechowski prior to 1914 provides an
accurate reflection of the direction which the
searchings of Polish architects took during this time.
Konstanty Wojciechowski was one of those
architects who decisively sought the consequences of
the epoch, being heavily reliant on historicist forms,
while his son, Jarosław, was of the generation whose
forms, drawn from the past were rejected in stages,
but not quite definitively. They shared in common a

care for the architectural heritage of Poland, as
reflected in their joint activity in the Society for the
Protecting ofHistoric Monuments. Following the death
of Konstanty, Jarosław became one of the most active
members ofthis society. He also served as a continuator
of his father's interests in conservation, conducting
restoration work on St. James's church in Sandomierz.
Both architects also shared a common artistic approach
to the architectural challenge of what constitutes a
church building, as well as the striving to search for
specific, vernacular forms arising out of historie
heritage.
