Hans Vredeman de Vries and his influence on the arts
International Symposium - January 2004
Weserrenaissance-Museum Schloss Brake, Lemgo
in collaboration with the Muzeum Historii Miasta Gdanska
Hans Vredeman de Vries was one of the most influential artists of the 16th century. In a rise to fame
that both accompanied and matched the expansion of the Antwerp graphics industry, he rapidly
became the universal draughtsman of pattern designs for architecture, perspective, ornamentation
and the applied arts. His etchings, which were published in Antwerp, brought him fame and recogni-
tion across the whole of Europe and made a lasting contribution to the spread of Renaissance forms
north of the Alps. While Vredeman de Vries has been held in high esteem throughout the history of
art for his artistic originality, today he is equally recognized for his outstanding significance as an
artistic role model and the creation of new media, in particular the universally applicable pattern
design. Vredeman achieved equal success with the introduction of central perspective into
Netherlandish painting.
The exhibitions which were shown in the past year in Antwerp and Lemgo presented the artist's
oeuvre in its innovative diversity and relevance to the period in which it was created. The focus of
these exhibitions was intentionally placed on Vredeman de Vries, with his influence on future genera-
tions playing a less significant role. The international symposium being organized by the
Weserrenaissance-Museum Schloss Brake in cooperation with the Muzeum Historii Miasta Gdanska
will therefore concentrate specifically on Vredeman de Vries' influence on the arts.
Lecture contributions (approx. 30 minutes in length) are to highlight the impact and significance of
Vredeman's work within the history of European painting, architecture, printed graphics and the
applied arts (including carpets, glass painting and furniture among others) between the 16th and 19th
centuries. The tradition of scenographic picture-making in 17th century North and South Netherlandish
painting is one theme to be covered, others relate to the art market of the time and the influence of
Calvinism and the Dutch struggle for independence on Vredeman's imagery, themes and reception.
Further topics of discussion are the effect of scenographic painting on town planning and castle
construction in the 17th and 18th centuries, and Vredeman's influence in the 19th century. A publica-
tion to include selected lecture contributions is also planned.
An abstract of the proposed lecture (approximately half a page in length) should be submitted by 18
August 2003 at the latest to the following address:
