PREHISTORIC AEGEAN POTTERY.

A 20. JUG. Ht. ioj in. From Yortan, as A i, etc. The neck has

been broken off at base of lip and anciently rivetted in three pairs of
large drilled holes.

Narrow neck, recurved lip, with a pellet on each side
and sharp corners, small flat base. Knobs and painted
chevrons as last. Fine polished black ware with brown
handle and patch on body. (Fig. 4.)

A 21. JUG. Ht. 9 J in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. .

As last, but ridged handle and body and no pellets
at lip. The painted chevrons are four-fold, they cross one
another between the knobs, and end in freely-drawn curves.
Fine polished black ware with a red-brown patch.

A 22. JUG. Ht. 6J in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc.

As last, but with three pairs of very small knobs set close
together and six chevrons, three of which are drawn over the
pairs of knobs, two between them, and one astride the base of
the handle. There is also a pair of pierced pellets hanging
from the base of the neck in front. Black ware mostly fired
brown. The front chevron is triple, the others four-fold.

A 23. JUG. Ht. 8Jin. From Yortan, as A 1, etc. One corner of lip

broken away.

Slightly flattened globular body, narrow cut-away neck,
lip pinched in and flanged, with sharp corners and an
angular knob on each side ; ridged handle and flat base.
On the shoulder are moulded three double chevrons in
high relief, over each of these is painted a four-fold chevron
in white, under the front one a double vertical zig-zag, on
the body each side of the handle two double vertical zig-
zags opposed to form a lattice-pattern and meeting at
base of neck. Very finely made black ware, smooth but
not highly polished. (Fig. 6.) H_____________________

A 24. JUG with side-spout. Ht. 4J in. From Yortan, as A 1, etc.

The usual wide-neck shape, but with lip turned out as in A 14 ; slightly
flattened base. In front of shoulder is a small knob, and on the right side a
short and narrow tubular spout. Rough polished grey-black ware.

[The turned-out lip occurs at Troy, 6'.5. 2343.]
