The figural composition. represents a rather crowded group of young women emerging as il
from a gate marked in a dark, neutral tone on the right hand side of the picture. The most impo-
sing figurę in a coat (cinnabar red) bordered with ermine is standing nearly in the center of the
picture singing and attentively reading the musie score. Her dress, like the train of the lute
player is painted primarily in ochrę, the outlines of the pleats in yellow are repainted in indian red
which forms the background for a black, graphic ornament. The lady standing opposite the
singer nearly with her back to the beholder is dressed in a beautiful light pink robe with bluish
shadows and white delineation of pleats; the dress visible underneath is white, the beret red
with white plumes. She is holding the fingerboard of a lute in her left hand which is visible.
A girl standing behind her uplifting in her right hand a wreath is wearing a yellow dress (naples
yellow) toned with rouge. The long skirt visible underneath is white folded with grey shadows.
