Two first variants were considered as a formal trar.sformation of an earlier image, called
generally The Throne of Mercy (Gnadenstuhl).6 The third one betrays a significant conformity
with the most popular type of the Pieła, in which the body of Christ rests on the lap of seated
Mary.7 It must be pointed out, however, that this conformity is of a wider scope than it used
to be recognized hitherto, sińce the examples of the Pieta are known showing the Virgin stan-
ding just as God the Father in the first of our variants. This intended formal assimilation of
the two representational themes — Pietas Mariae and Pietas Christi — resulted obviously
