Jesus is simultaneuosly Priest and Victim sińce — as St Paul wrotc — He "also hath loved
us, and hath given Himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savor"
(tradidit seipsum pro nobis, oblationem et hostiom Deoj.-° According to St Thomas Acrainas Christ
is Priest also because He would like to give His lifc and really gave it for propitiation of God
the Father. On. the other hand, He is Victim sińce being man and suffering death at the hands
of His tormentors He found Himself in the state of a sacrificial destroying (in statu victimaliw).
As long as man lives, his life in a sense belongs to him. But Jesus through His death gave His
