Christum figurat passum non confiringi debuerunt. Sed dico quare tunc ecclesia permittit depingi
vulnus lateris per ossa pectoralia. Dico quod pictura est laycorum scriptura. Ideo ut expressius
per picturam laicus exprimatur quod lancea militis penetrmiit cor sahatoris ideo circa ossa pecto-
ralia infixum depingitur: cum tamen inferius in mollicie carnea infixum fueril ut ostensum est.
On the two reverses of the St Trinity altarpiece of Bernt Notkę two main acts of the initiative
of God the Father in the work of Redemption are visualized in the way strikingly close to the
commentary of St John Chrysostom upon the Saerifice of Isaac:62 Hic enim est Filius meus
dilectus in quo mihi bene complacui. A patre Mo in holocaustum offerebatur (the left wing) et nunc
Pater tradidit. Et hoc clamat Paulus dicens: Qui proprio filio suo non pepercit sed pro nobis tradidit
illum (the right wing).
