under the dress. The background is composed of curtains; the upper one, being a tawny yellow,
crosses the picture and is attached to a pillar at the side. This excellent portrait was painted by
the artist in Spain".

In 1892 Rooses issued his fifth volume, apparently not having seen either the London exhibi-
tion or the reproduction in The Graphic. He noted that Bunbury had lent portrait of Spinola,
but he was unable to make the connection6.

Sir Henry Bunbury, the seventh baronet, was a Lieutenant General of distinguished service
who was from 1809 to 1816 Under Secretary of State for War and for some years, like his son
Edward, a Suffolk Member of Parliament. His own father was Henry William Bunbury, the
celebrated artist and caricaturist; and from him perhaps he inherited a taste for fine pictures.
It was the General who formed the collection and the library which Sir Edward inherited7. At Sir
