24. Caspar Netcher (?), Portrait of a Man, Muzeum Narodowe, Warsaw
The dimensions of the picture speak also for C. Netscher. He very often used an almostr
identical size in other grand portraits, which are close to the discussed one in composition and
background showing similar battle scenes (see: C. Hofstede de Groot, Beschreibendes und
krilisches Verzeichnis der Werke, Esslingen, 1907—1928, V, no. 229, 230, 257; also cat.
of the auction "J. Heyl", Miinchen (Helbing), 28-X-1930, no. 167: the auction cat. W. Baare,
Braunschweig (Hiinerberg), 5-III-1958, no. 21. The identification of the poitrayed person
also appears incorect. The manner of painting and the composition of the entiie picture
exclude the possibility of its execution before 1665 and it is only until that time that the-
features and the age of the portrayed person could have possibly agreed with Friedrich
Wilhelm von Hohenzollern (1620—1688). Finally, his images from the sixties — by W. Hon-
thorst, A. Hanneman, J. Mijtens or P. Nason among others — show a man much older
than the one represented here, coarsely featured with an obese face.
