There are three other drawings in the National Museum in Warsaw, namely the Saint with
a Book66 (Fig. 31), Doubting Thomas67 (Fig. 32) and the one known as The Wandering Jew68
(Fig. 33), that have been associated witli Herdt. They are all signed with the monogram ,,1DH”
in ink, which is probably why Alwin Schultz, who analysed the album from which they come,
attributed them to Herdt. The drawing representing a saint with a book (Fig. 31) is dated 1642 at
the bottom on the left. It is a rather poor, student work, and Herdt’s authorship is apparently
precluded by the watermark (a man with a club on a shield under a crown, and the letters WT,
Fig. 26), recorded in The Nostitz Papers69 (No. 534—542), which appears in a similar form on
Viennese documents from 1637 (No. 534) and 1649 (No. 537), which is when Herdt was most
probably still in Antwerp. FIerdt’s authorship seems morę convincing in the case of the Doubt-
