37. Jan de Herdt, Portrait of Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski, print (photo: National Library in

Warsa w)

•signed seven portraits, of Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski (Fig. 37), Hieronim August Lubomirski,
Duke Ferdinand v. Dietrichstein, Count Louis Raduit de Souches (Fig. 34), Count Raimund
Montecuculi, Count Johann Rottal (Fig. 35) and Count Miclos Zrinyi (Fig. 36), whicli were
executed by Fr. van der Steen and Cornelis Meyssens. The prints might have been accompanied
by portraits painted by Herdt in oil, which surmise has been put forward by Nagler70 with
regard to two of them, of Montecuculi and Rottal, which, Nagler believes, may be hidden in the
arsenals of manor houses in Moravia. Up to now, I have only succeeded in finding the portrait
of Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski71 * * (Fig. 38). It represents the Polish aristocrat, who performed
a number of State functions, such as Crown Marshal, Grand Crown Marshal, Crown Field Hetman,
and the Starost of Sącz and Spisz. Following his brilliant success in the Swedish wars and the
victory of Cudnów, after 1661, Lubomirski, a relentless opponent of the French party and the
vivente rege election, was morę and morę debarred from the court. He did not take part in the
Moscow campaign and undertook a series of steps that were treated as an act of high treason
