In 1975 F. Heinemann mistakenly classified the painting as a copy of the
work by Lambert Sustris in Kassel (no. GK 504). In 1996 E. Buijsen from the
RKD in the Hague suggested Frans Franken the Younger, dating the painting
ca. 1600. L. Slatkes likewise in 1996 suggested Paris Bordone or aNetherlandish
painter active in Venice.

A somewhat larger version of The Death of Cleopatra, without the
background landscape, was classified as from the 17th century School of
Bologna on January 15, 1993 at auction in Sotheby’s in New York (no. 180;
oil on canvas, 166.2 x 101.6 cm).
