[h] LODOWICK STUART, DUKE OF RICHMOND AND LENOX,
Was son to Esme Stuart, Duke of Lenox in Scotland, and grandson to John,
Lord d'Aubignie, younger brother to Matthew, Earl of Lenox, who was grandfather
to King James the First. He was created Earl of Newcastle and Duke of Richmond
'7th May, in the twenty-first year of the reign of James the First. This nobleman
was married three times : his first wife was of the family of Ruthven ; his second of
that of Campbell; and his last, Frances, daughter of Thomas, Viscount Howard, of
Rindon. He was made lord-steward of the king's household, and was a great favourite
with King James, to whom he was related. He died suddenly, Feb. 16, 1623, on
which day a parliament was to have assembled, but in consequence of the duke's
death it was prorogued.
