Fig. i. Marble Pilaster Cap from Inner Colonnade, Upper Story
(The Fragments of Heads etc. were found in the Agora)

wall, instead of over the wall of delicate pillars and lintels only
55 cm. thick, as Mr. Koldewey has drawn them. As some of
these blocks were found near the surface of the debris, half-
way up the slope, it was assumed with reason that they be-
longed to the middle story, which had fallen in at some late
period, after the earth had accumulated in the story below.
The following notes on the drawings were prepared by Mr.
Koldewey: —
“ South Front. (Page 75, Fig. 3.)
Restored after the Market Building at Alinda. (See Page 108, Figs.
3, 5.) The upper story and triglyph cornice is certain. No piece was
found of the outside windows in lower story.
“Section. (Page 83, Fig. 1.)
The lower and upper parts only are certain. The middle story
and lower front uncertain.

Fig. 2. Stone Gutter
Leading through Subterranean Passage beneath the Agora
to Stoa Reservoir

“Water Reservoirs. (Page 107, Fig. 2.)
One of the water reservoirs was found in chamber No. 1, rather
roughly worked, 0.58 m. high. In it were the holes for the water-pipe
and the outlet in front at the left.

“ Details.
The form of the thick square piers is certain. (Page 91, Fig. 2.)
Below a piece with projecting boss, then a piece with chamfered cor-
ners, then a piece with chamfer going to a square, and then a piece
with square corners and on top a capital. The exact height of pil-
lar could not be determined. It is certain that something lay on top of
the capital that was broader than the pillar, namely, as broad as the con-
soles are underneath. But it could not be determined whether the con-
soles were immediately on top of the capitals, as in Alinda, or whether
an epistyle course was there. Height of the double half-columns
in upper story, Page 95, Fig. 11, is uncertain. They are restored from
various drums of different heights.”

Fig. 3. Fragment of Terra Cotta Roof Tile

The building bears a great resemblance to one at Alinda
in Asia Minor, a city near Tralles, the modern town of Aidin.
The building at Alinda has not yet been investigated, but it
appears to be in a much better state of preservation than the
one at Assos, and if it should be excavated and drawings made,
these fragments from Assos will doubtless be more intelligible,
and a better restoration be possible of the middle story.
