67. THE HOLY FAMILY
B.43 O.99 H.648 R. 222 M.66 K.66 Bw.$6 Dry-point
Sides of plate irregular, narrower at top ; corners sharp. Not signed.
Date: 1512.
Really fine impressions, like those at Berlin and Vienna, are very rare The impres-
sion formerly in the Lanna collection (lot 1418, sale of May, 1909—Artaria, Mk.
20,000) is fine but not quite of the first quality. Nor is that in the British Museum,
which, with another at Frankfurt, is mentioned by Hausmann as among the best.
A very good one is in the collection of Mr. T. D. Barlow. The distinctness of the
distant landscape is a criterion of an early impression. Later impressions illustrate
the successive deterioration of the plate by scratches and the wearing off of the
burr, till it becomes a mere wreck. Hausmann notes the quite early appearance of
an oblique scratch across the nose and left corner of the mouth of the Virgin.
