and an interesting feature connected with it is the blackening of the pavement
along the Northern margin of the vat, evidently produced by the combustion
of the oil contained in it.
As the ragged edges of the broken pavements show, most of the subse-
quent uncovering of the cists was the ruthless work of treasure hunters. In
some instances their slabs had been almost entirely removed, leaving little
but the masonry of the walled pits in which they had been originally inserted,
