growth of the modern landscape suggests that in Minoan times there had

been a greater rainfall than now.

The importance of this Minoan centre is further brought out by
the appearance on the highest part of the site, overlooking the steep hill-side
to the East, of lines of well-hewn limestone blocks,1 clearly belonging to
a small Palace, the residence of some local prince or governor. In the
