In den folgenden Versen 175—593 wendet sich
der Dichter von seiner anfangs benutzten Vorlage,
der „Vita“, ab und schöpft seinen Stoff vorläufig
aus einer anderen Quelle. Diese war, wie sich
zeigen wird, eine unter Heranziehung vieler alter
Historiker im Kloster von St. Albans zusammen-
geschriebene Kompilation, die in der Zeit von
1195—1214 entstanden ist und vielleicht denselben
Autor wie das „Leben des Offa“ gehabt hat.1) Sie
ist allerdings verloren gegangen, doch findet man
sie in des Matthaeus Parisiensis, eines Mönches
von St. Albans, Chronica Majora, deren ersten
Teil sie bildet, wieder2).

piler has extracted a considerable portion of this Life of Offa (pp.
356, seqq.), and at the same time has enlarged some of his ex-
tracts in a männer very mach as the author of such a piece would
do in using it in this männer; and in addition to this, on another
occasion (p. 252), in speaking of the tomb of S. Alban, he uses
the same words that the author of the Life of Offa uses. The
Life is used again in speaking of Offa in p. 343. 1t appears to
me that a very possible theory may be that the author of the
Life of Offa was also the author of the Compilation which formed
the basis of the histories of Wendover and Paris.
