Giuseppe GRASS! fW
Born in Vienna in 1757 — Died in Dresden in 1838
He began his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1768, to become its
member in 1791. In the same year he arrived in Poland, probably invited by King Stanislas
Augustus. In 1795 he returned to Vienna and from 1799 he lived (with some interrup-
tions) in Dresden, where in 1800 he took over a professorial post at the academy. In 1810
he joined St. Luke's Academy in Rome and it was there that he acted as the director of
Saxon artists in Italy in the years 1816-1821.
He was a portraitist. He painted images of Polish people both before his arrival in Poland
and following his return to Vienna, and later also in Dresden. He executed portraits of
persons connected with the patriotic camp of reformers, but also of the Targowica traitors.
The images of Tadeusz Kosciuszko and Prince Joseph Poniatowski painted by him created
the iconography of Polish national heroes.
