It is to be observed , that the Robe of the Bride
is marked with points placed by three , and three.
This number , as appears by the writings of Plato , and
Plutarch, was looked upon as sacred , and , as the Sym-
bol of perfeftion , and Creation , perhaps because three
numbers multiplied the one by the others formed the
solid , and that all which is body , or matter , is under-
stood to have three demensions. The Genius of fecundity,
and the three points taken as the expression of the crea-
tive faculty, agree very well in marking out the great end
os the mariage institution in general. We have frequent
examples of these three mysterious points in the paintings
of this new Colle&ion of Vases.

The Umbrella was made use of by the Ancients not
only for the purpose of keeping osf the rays of the Sun,
but also as a mark of high dignity . It may be for both
of those purposes , that the Bride is furnished with one .
The Scene represented in this plate may be supposed to
pass in the Parastade, which according to Vitruvius's de-
scription of Grecian Houses was a little open recess com-
municating with the Peristilium, and situated between two
Bedchambers. There was a time, that in some Countries
it was the custom for the new married couple , to go to
bed before the setting of the Sun{a). The Foot stool, as
represented under one of the Brides feet, was also among
the ancients a mark of dignity.
