Colombina (1892) nor in Harrisse, notes on Columbus.
Title-page, 7 unn. 11., 95 pp. This interesting poem was composed by the Paris
physician A. Mizaud (-4-1578) and contains a passage in which the disco very
of America is evidently ascribed to Amerigo Vespucci: “Necnon Américain
a primo inventore vocatam” (p. 7). The work is dedicated to the learned lady Margaret
of Valois, Duchess of Berry, who afterwards married Eman. Philibert of Savoy.
A slightly stained copy. The revolving parts to the diagrams of p. 15 and 16 are
wanting. Of the last leaf a piece is torn away without any loss of text.
58 MONTANUS, A., de Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld of Be-
schryving van America en t’Zuidland, Verwaetende d’Oorsprong
der Americaenen en Zuidlanders, gedenkwaerdige togten
derwaerds etc. W. frontisp., and 32 mostly double-page plates,
amongst which 32 charming views and 69 illustr. in the text.
Fol. Amsterdam, J. Meurs, 1671. Old vellum. Very rare. 480 —
Sabin 50086. Tiele 763. Asher Nr. 14. (Not in Leclerc.) The most important
work on America published in the I7the century in Holland, very interesting
especially for the history of New Netherland, because the sources from which
Montanus has drawn, are lost. Besides this work contains the first relation of
the discovery of Tasmania (p. 579).
There are 2 issues of this original edition of 1671. This copy is the 2d issue, not
mentioned by the bibliographers and has not the portrait of Joan Maurits, prince
of Nassau (only published in the first one). “Sought for chiefly for its plates, especially
for the engraved view of New Amsterdam (New York), which is, without any
doubt, the handsomest, and at the same time the most agreeable view ot Dutch
New York” (see Sabin).
Among the beautiful, double-sized copper-engravings are the views of Vetus
Mexico, Nova Mexico (large folding view), Pagus Hispanorum in Florida,
Havana, Domingo in Hispaniola, Porto Rico, Portus Acapulco, Francisco
de Campeche, Cartagena, Callao de Lima, Cusco etc., on the most part of the views
are representative types of ships.
Contains the portraits of Columbus, Vespucci, Magellan, the last kings
of Peru and Mexico and Pizzarro, and the following maps: totius Americae
descriptio (per J. Meursius), Novum Belgium (New York), Nova Virginia, Virginia
austr. et Florida, Bermudas (-Islands), Insulae Americanae (Antilles), Peru, Brasilia,
Venezuela, Paraguay, Chile etc.
Asher’s bibliogr. essay: p. 223: “The plates in the text are the same as those in
the following translations, but are earlier and therefore better impressions, and represent
the g am es, festivals, costumes, battles, occupations, religious rites, cannibalism,
habitations, manners and customs of the Indians”.
Several leaves and the frontispice are a little damaged on margins and repaired;
but generally a good copy of this very rare Americanum.
