The best and most complete edition of the Theatrum orbis terrarum con-
taining as it does all the additional maps made in the author’s days. A most
beautiful copy of this great work which stands unrivalled in its time and may
be regardet as the first large 16 th century atlas (see Allgem. Dtsch. Biogr. XXIV, 429).
The whole of the copperplates are carefully coloured by a contemporary hand.
Copies in such a fine colouring as the present one are among the
greatest rarities.
The first part of the present edition contains — besides 100 European maps —
the following. Worldmap — Asia with part of Australia and New-Guinea — Pacific
Ocean with Terra Australis — Mexico — West Indian Archipelago — Peru with
Florida and Yucatan — Tartary — China — Japan — East Indies with Moluccas —
Persia — Turkey — Palestine — Anatolia and Eygypt — Abyssinia — Barbary —
Morocco with Congo — Iceland.
Of the maps contained in the Parergon we should like to point out: Geographia
sacra with a small worldmap — Palestine — Judaea — Peregrinationes St. Pauli —
Abrahami peregrinatio — Aevi veteris typus geographicus — Pontus Euxinus — Africa
propria — Egypt = Alexandri Magni peregrinatio.
The extremely fine ornamentation of the single -maps deserves high praise. Most
of the maps have been engraved by Hogenberg and are adorned with fine border-
pieces, cartouches and escutcheons. The staffage is of a highly interesting character,
e. g. the figures showing the costume of the respective countries on such maps as
Russia, Tartary, Frieslandia orientalis, or the great number of ships and fabulous sea
monsters by which the sea on several charts is animated.
A well preserved copy.
