cana II, 1053, 1066, 1080, 1101. Vindel, bibl. Orient- (1911)' 2209—12.
A full set of Nieremberg’s great work together with Andrade’s and Cassani’s
continuations.
“This work having been published at different periods1, complete setis
are excessively rare. The interest of the work isi
not inferior to its rarity as i t contains accounts of
many early voyages to thelndies not elsewhere to
be f o u n d” (Sabin).
As will be seen by the descriptions in the above bibliographies, the volumesi
of the present work bear different titles and accordingly may have been
sold separately, a fact which would account for the extraordinary diffi-
culty to bring all the volumes together. Single volumes were priced hy
Vindel in his “Bibl. Orient” (1911) at plas 700.—. Sr. Palau y Dulcet in
his recently published “Manuel de Librero Hispano-Americano” quotes for
these 4 vols. alone a price of ptas. 3000.—, adding the following note
“Los cuatro volum en es descritos cuando ;se presentan reunidos alcanzan
gran aprecio en el comercio.” Our present set contains not only these
four volumes hy Nieremberg, hüt jalso the continuation by Alph. de
Andrade and Jos. Cassani consisting of five more folio volumes, which
according to Brunet are still “beaucoup plus rares que les Premiers.”
As to the contents of this truly voluminous work we refer the reader to the
detailed notes in Leclerc 408, Medina (Bibl. esp. de Filipinas) 156 and!
Vindel, Bibl. Orient. 2209—12. An jadequate idea of the outstanding Amec
rican interest of this work may be got from the fact that the tables of
contents which Leclerc gives of vols. I, II and IV alone (so far as they
relate to American affairs) fill nearly one page and a half of his Biblio-
th eca Americana.
A very good sound copy from the library of the Earl of Crawford with his
bookplate inside front covers.
