Einer der ersten Drucke aus Gutenbergs zweiter Presse, ge-
druckt mit der berühmten Catholicontype und, wenn man von den
Donaten absieht, wohl das vierte von Gutenberg gedruckte Buch
überhaupt. Es war ein Probedruck für das Catholicon, und die Bibliographen stimmen
darin überein, daß es noch vor der Fertigstellung des letzteren vollendet war, also wohl noch
im Jahr 1459. Was die Seltenheit anbetrifft, die bei einem so frühen Erzeugnis der Buch-
druckerkunst ganz selbstverständlich ist, so sei nur erwähnt, daß der Matth, de Cracovia noch
viel seltener ist als das berühmte Catholicon u. die 42zeilige Bibel (vgl. die Zusammenstellung
bei Ricci). Winship weist nur 2 Exemplare in Amerika nach.
Das Exempl. ist breitrand. u. tadellos erhalten, leider sind Blatt 1—4 in Faksimile. Es
ist rubriziert, die Personen in dem Dialog „Ratio“ u. „Conscientia“ sind vom Rubrikator an den
vom Drucker freigelassenen Stellen, da eine grössere Type für diesen Zweck nicht zur Ver-
fügung stand, gleichfalls eingetragen.
Editio princeps dieses Traktates über den Gebrauch des Abendmahls. Der Verfasser
Matthaeus de Krockow (von Wickerode) war ein pommerischer Adeliger, Sekretär 11. Rat des
Kaisers Rupert, von 1405—1410 (sein Todesjahr) Bischof von Worms.
One of the first books issued from Gutenberg’s second press
printed with the famous Catholicontype, and leaving out the
editions of the Donatus, evidently the fourth book printed by
Gutenberg at all. It was a sampleprint for the big Catholicon and all bibliographers
agree, that it was issued before the latter was finished, apparently still in 1459. As to the
scarceness of the book it may be pointed out that the Matth, de Cracovia is still more
scarce as the famous Catholicon and the 42 lines Bible (See the comparing table in de
Ricci). Only 2 copies are in the U. S. according to the Census.
The copy is on large margins and in very good condition, unfortunatly are sheets 1 to 4
in facsimile. Rubricated, the persons of the dialogue: Ratio and Conscientia filled in by the
Rubricator in the sparces left out by the printer, because he had no larger type for this
purpose at his disposal.
