. hand- lhe student were
to learn by heart soma
poetry or praise of God,
. and the teaohar were to
see whether it is properly
praotiaed or not.

The teacher must im-
part his instruction on
the basis of the child's
previous knowledge, so
that the pupil may be
able to grasp the new
lesson on the basis of
already acquired know-
ledge and thus a bond
will be established with
what he knows and what
is given.

Akbar stressed the need
of cooperation betweeu
. the pupil and t e teacher
which is to be based and
ruled by love.

The subjects were not
only Muslim theology,
grammar, eto but those
subjects which were r eed
cd to 1 ve a practical
life, such as books of mo-
rals, arithmetic, agricul
ture, geometry { mensura-
tion, astronomy, houehold-
matters. the rules of go
vernmrnt medicine, logic,
tabii ie. the physical sci-
ences, riyazi i e. sei nee
of quantity and ilahi i e.
science of religion and
history. ,

TFfa aim of such an
education was not only
religions but social i.e. to
enable each individual to
aoquire a position in the
society and to live a pros-
perous life.

These regulations cer-
tainly bring out ia
very favourable light only
Akbar's interest in and/
care for the education of
his subjects but also for
his attemps to make that
eduoation efficient.

The above discussion

sounds like an emblem
of a modern thinker who
regards education as the
unfoldment of talent po
tentialities and holds ob-
sTvaticn ss the basis of
instruction, language
should always be linked
with observation, the tea-
cher should proceed
from the known to the
unknown, from simple to
comphz, trschirig should
aim at development and
not at dogmatic exposi-
tion, teacher should res-
pect the individuality of
the pupil and the relation
between the two should
be based upon and ruled
by love.

Thus one can without
hesitation accept Akbar
ss a great modern thinker
in the 16th century.
