INDIAN SPORTSMEN IN LONDON
BY B. B. RAY CHAUDHURI
( Our Loudon CorrMpondent )
London, April 23
Indian sportsmen and
women will be very much
in the aewi in this coun-
try this Summer. The
Indian cricketers have
already arrived and have
received great publieity
in the British Press. We
hope that this time they
will exhibit a better style
of cricket than on the
last Donation when the
Indian test team was
practically routed. I have
witnessed our cricketers
praotioing sinoe their ar-
rival here They were in
good form in their mat-
ches against the looal
Indian Gymkhana team.
P. Roy, the 'pride of
Bengal" is in excellent
form and his carefree
batting delighted the spec-
tators. I met the Indian
orioketorsat Berners Hotel
in the West End of Lon •
don, and each one of
them seemed to be in
good spirits. Perhaps an
equally great .attraction
in this country will be
when, a-t it is reported.
Miss ''Arati Saba of the
Caloutta University enters
into the English Channel
Swimming Contest. This
contest is organised each
year by Mr. Butlin of
the famous ButliDS Holi-
day Camps. Miss balm,
an Olympic competitor
at Helsinki in 1962, will
be the first Asian woman
to onter the English Chan-
nel Swimming Contest,
and naturally . various
British swimming organi-
sations are anxious to
welcome this "mermaid of
Bengal. '
The British commu-
nists are etill continuing
oampaign against Dalai
Lama and his Tibetan
followers. Thus 'Ihe
Daily Worker" of London
headlines: ' Dalai Fabri
oates". Here are .some of
the Communist stories
published in the organ
of the British Communist
Party-"Dalai s statement-
a orude document, lama
in reasoning, full of lies
and loopholes." "Indian
expansionist elements bad
inherited a shameful
legacy (from Brit if h im-
perialists) which is why
the rebels had turned
their faces to India and
their backs to the mother-
land" I must not refrain
from quoting another
statement from a com-
munist political commen-
tator whose logic may be
May 3. 1960
understood only by the
fellow oomrades and tra-
veller! in India. The
political commentator of
Hsinhua N»ws Agency
states: "Independence for
Tibet had always been
an imperialist scheme and
the rebel call for it re-
flected the imperialist
will" Confucious thou
should have been living
at this time China has
nerd of thee.''
I have just received
a oopy of the 1969-60
edition of "Fielding's
travel Guide to Eu-
rope " Every Rummer I
look forward to Fielding's
Guide which helps me a
great deal in my Conti-
nental tours at any time
of the year. Mr. Temple
Fieldine is an institution.
The one thing I like best
of this Quide is that in
one volume I have the
full necessary particulars
of all Continental coun-
tries. The Guide contains
up to-date information
about food, transport,
accommodation, etc., re-
vised to 100,(,00 words
each year. Mr Fielding
is a friend to all tou-
rists on the Continfnt.
I entirely agree with the
slogan:- "I'ts smart to go
Fielding." The Guide is
published by Messrs.
William Bloane Associates,
and touritts from Indie
and other Sterling areas
can get a copy from Mr.
Arthur F. Bird of
London.
