BY B. B. RAY CHAUDHURI

( Our London Correspondent )
London, October 22.

The defeat of the
Labour Party at the
General Eleotion ia still
the main topio of disous-
aion amongst the Labour
leaders who are trying
to discover the reasons
for the sudden and
unexpected setback. It
is, however, generally
agreed that the Labour
Party must deoide whe-
ther it it' a Party for
Sooialittn or for uncial
reform. The Right Wing
of the Party has moved
far away from "Sooialism
in our time", and the
average map is justified
in saying that there is very
little differenoe between a
Labour men and a Liberal.
The Trade union move-
ment also disoovered that
a large number of Trad*
Unionists have voted the
Tories into power. Per-
haps as a result of
re-examination of the
present Labour policy, a
new policy whioh would
appeal to the progressive
element of the oountry
may emerge. The days
of Keir Hardy are gone,
but Labour still hat a
mission to fulfil in. the
atomic age. There should

not be any compromise in
Labour's polioy of bann-
ing nuclear weapons, and
their faith in oo-existence,
because the alternative
ia the annihilation of
mankind. The great trade
Union leader, Mr. Frank
Cousins, who is shortly
proceeding to India, has
realised this. lie it
optimistic that his policy
for the total ban on nuc-
lear weapons will receive
general support in India.

' I am deeply grateful
to my colleagues who
have given me a farewell
lunohenn party at the
C«fe. Royal in view of my
departure for India next
week for four months
duration. On this occa-
sion, Mr. Dennis Healey,
the prominent Labour
M. P. who acoompanied
Mr Oaittkell and Mr.
Bevan during their reoent
visit to Moscow gave ut a
very interetling talk on
Russia to-day in general
and Mr. Khruthobev in
particular. We were sur-
prised when Mr. Healy
informed ut that the
Russian leaden declined
to tay anything about tha
Chinese invasion of India.

I have jutt received
another very interacting
Art publication, viz:-

"CONSTANTIN Bi<ANCUSl"

by CarolaGiedion-Welokcr,
published by Bbnno
Schwabb & Co., the
famous Swiss Publisher!.
This is a publication which
will appeal not only to
artists and. students of
Art, but to the general
public alio. It ia a great
aohievment and should be
in the possession of every
Art lovsr. I understand
that an American edition
will soon come out. I
em sure this will be a
popular publication in the
English speaking wrrld,
and I have no hesitation
in recommendingthiswon
derful scbolastio work to
all Art students in India.
A copy in their posse-
ssion is a "must."
