LIFE SENTENCE FOR LAMA CHUNDUI TOPDEN

Gyami Tshering Acquitted

Jalpaiguri, January 28

In the case relating
to the alleged murder of
Lobsang Uawa (60). for-
merly Head Lama of
Gaoden Mouastry in Tibet
on the night of September
24, I960, at Kalimpong, the
Sessions : Judge, Mr. T.K.
Pal, in passing judgement
on . January 27 found
Chundui Topden, a Tibe-
tan Lama, aged about 22,
guilty under Section H02
IPC and held that there
w»s no extraneouB oirenm-
stanoes for not awarding
him capital punishment.
Bur the Sessions Judge,
considering the tender age
of ^the accused and the
faot that he was repentant
for murdering a fellow
Tibetan, took a' lenient
view and sentenced him
to life imprisonment.
. Regarding Gyami Tshe-
r'lig alias Machu ( hni, a
Chinese residing at Kalim-
pong and said to be a
well-to-do business man,
who was also a co-aocused
in the case, the Sessions
Judge found him not
guilty of the Charge under
Seotion 302/109 Ii C and
acquitted bim.

On the night of occur-
rence, according tu the
prosecution, a woman in-
mats of the building at

Kalimpong where Lobsang
Dawa, who was an in-
fluential Lsma in Tibet,
lived alone iB said to have
heard an unusual sound
coming from the room of
th« deceased. Suspecting
that thieves were in the
room she called out for
help Neighbours arrived
and found the mom closed
from inside. Ultimately
the police arrived and
broke open the door.

a corner of the room with
a blanket thrown ever
him The Lama lay dead
on his bed with some in-
jury on his nose and also
marks on his throat which
could have been due to
strangulation by manual,
pressure.

GURKHA HIMALAYAN
TRIP POSTPONED

It. is understood that
this spring's Gurkha ex-
pedition to the Sharphu
area in eastern Nepal has
been postponed till next
year because.- of leave
difficulties for the Indian
officers. Five- British and
five Indian officers of
Gurkha battalions were to
make the attempt on Ml.
.Sharpu (-21 000 ft) believed •
to be a difficult virgin
peak oh the watershed of
the Tamur river.
