ELECTION CAMPAIGN

Editor:

s. c. jain IHma

The eleotion campaign
by different politioal par-
tise nnd independeot can-
didates, has been inten-
sified, but no far voters
are oonoerned do popular
enthusiasm hai been noti-
ced as yet. So far the
oampaign has been peace-
ful exoept a minor olash
at Kongo. We hope this
peaceful atmosphere will
prevail throughout the
eleotions, if personal at-
tacks are avoided. Eleo-
tion is a test of the
policy whioh a party or
a candidate should pursue
and in order to apply it
oorreotly it should be
fought in a sporting spirit.
Emphasis should be laid
on polioies and program-
mes in order to give the
voters the oorreot idea.

FALL IN WEST BENGAL'S
RICE PRODUCTION

Calcutta, Feb. 9

West Bengal's 1961-62
rioe orop, which has now.
bean fiMy harvested, will
not be as good as that
of 1080 61. It is now
expected to be over700,000
tons less than the pre-
vious year's total yield of
6.4 million tons.

Drought and late lo-
wing in some parte of
thn State partly explain
this year's relatively low
production. Human fai-
lures in the form of in-
adequate supply of irriga-
tion water and unt;mely
and unsatisfactory distri-
bution of fertilizers are
also believed to have cau-
sed the decline in pro-
duction.

Taking the State's
total requirement of rice
for human consumption
in 1962 at 6.6 million
tons, the year's defioit
will come to about 800,000
tons. Allowing for wast-
age and seeds, the total
yield should have been
6.16 million tons to make
the State self-sufficient in
rioe.
