EXCISE DUTY ON POWERLOOMS UNDESIRABLE

( From Our Correspondent )
Darjeeling, May 17

Sri Swaraj B o s e,
Managing Director. Uttar
Banga Industrial Corpo-
ration, and representative
of Eight Powerloom Co-
operative of North Bengal
sent telegram*, to Prime
Miniiter Nehru, Finance
Minister Morarji Desai and
Law Minister Ashok Sen
New Delhi for exemption
of exoise duty imposed on
Powerlooms. The telegram
says: ''Powerloom Coope-
rative Societies will face
death knell if exoise duties
imposed. Four-loom units
are exempted from excise
duties. In powerloom co-
operative socitifs, one
loom is allotted to one
weaver and Government
has given loan of Rupees
Fil'iyfuiir Thousand each
to 10 Cooperative Sooities
consisting of 16 looms
eaoh Powerloom coopera-
tive societies should be
exempted from the same
other wise Government
money amounting Rupees
Fifiyfour Lakhs will be
wasted and 6 0( 0 people
will be unemployed in
West Bengal."

Sri Bose says if Excise
Duty is imposed on the
Powerloom Cooperative
Societies consisting of 16
looms, they shall have to
pay Rs 3,600/ per month.

It is impossible for any
unit of 16 looms to pay
such heavy duty which
has been imposed He
disclosed that i-loom units
have been exempted from
Excise Duty whereas the
Po"»erloom Cooperative
Societies have got no
exemption; but in Power-
loom Societies one loom
is allotted to ! person.
When Government are
encouraging small indus-
tries on cooperative basis
and giving loan, it is not
understood why they im
pose duties to close the
factory. Six thousand per-
sons are direotly employed
in Powerloom Cooperative
Societies.

Sri Rose made an
appeal to withdraw Excise
Duties imposed on Power-
loom Cooperative Societies
