DEFENDING FREEDOM

(Continued from page 7)

In innumerable ways,
we can make the task cf
the Government easieg
and help the national
effort. Workers in a'.i
walka of life have already
pledged themselves to
maximise production by
working harder and longer.
But there is also an ob-
verse aspect of the pro-
duction drive, nam»ly,
economy in consumption.
The less you and I take
up the more will be avai-
lable for the Jawans as
the front.

Here, again, the child-
ren have set an example
that their elders oould,
with profit, emulate. In
Coimbatore, they have
decided to walk to the
schools and donate the
bus fare saved to the
Defence Fund.

There are also other
ways of relieving pressure
on scaree resources—by
imposing a self denying
ordinance—through the
prohibition of austonta-
tion, luxury ard waste in
any shape or form, par-
ticularly at receptions and
weddings. If an adequate
number of people volun-
teered for Home Guards
and as civil defence work-
ers, the police could be
relieved for military du-
ties.

One last word. Our
trials have just begun,

and it ia not impossible
that the situation may
gel worse before it gets
better. Hera we should
draw a lesson from the
magnificent example of
tha British, who plumbed
the depths of Dunkirk
and the Battle of Britain
before emerging into day-
light.

Our cause ia just,
our hearts sound. Wq
must bend our sinews to
build the mighty war.
machine, which is the
only answer to the perfidy
of our northern r.eighbour,
who have returned hatred
for love and praotioed
war from behind the
shield Panchsheel

Disappointment;, even
disasters, there may bs
yet. But of the final
outcome there should be
little doubt.—(Courtesy :
