Alanus de Insulis, Alanus Porretanus, Alain de Lille, ca. 1120—1203, Doctor
Universalis, gehört zu den berühmtesten Schriftstellern u. Gelehrten aus der ersten
Periode der Scholastik. In diesem Werk gibt er in alphabet. Anordnung Erklärungen
biblischer Ausdrücke, die bei den Kirchenvätern nicht zu finden sind.
Das Buch stammt aus einer Presse, von der nur 8 Drucke bekannt sind.
Man hat den G. W. mit einem Clas Wencker oder Konrad Wolfach identi-
fizieren wollen, seine Tätigkeit scheint sich auf die Jahre 1473 u. 1474 beschränkt zu
haben. Seine Erzeugnisse gehören zu den selteneren Inkunabeln. S. 1 in rot u. schwarz
gedruckt.
Rubriziert, am Anfang 2 Initialen in rot, grün, rosa etc., andere Initialen in rot aus
der Zeit, weitere in rot oder blau in der Schnörkelschrift des 17. Jh. Auf einer Seite
unten 2 Hunde u. ein Löwe in Federzeichnung aus derselben Zeit. Einige Bll.
leicht gebräunt.
First and only 15th-century edition. — Alanus de Insulis
(Alain de Lille), known as „Doctor Universalis“, about 1120—1203. In this book he
explains Scripture terms omitted in the writings of the Fathers.
No more than 8 books are known to have issued from this small Strassburg
press, which was working in 1473 and 1474 only. The printer C. W. is believed by
some bibliographers to be identical with ClasWenckerorKonradWolfach.
All his productions are very rare. Page 1 printed in red and black.
At the beginning, 2 initials in several colours; other initials — partly with guide-
letters — supplied in red by a Contemporary hand, still others in red or blue by a 17th-
century scribe. The lower margin of one page has a pen-drawing of two dogs
and a lion.

stiche teilweise unterlegt.

hyphens.
Rubricated, capitals supplied in red. The copy is, on the whole, well preserved, the
first and the last two 11. only being slightly stained and damaged by clasp nails, and
the last leaf having been strengthened on account of wormholes. Leaf 1, blank, missing.
