( The eight sketches here reproduced, are selected from a scries executed by the artist during a recent visit
to the little French fishing village of Equilien, a few miles from Boulogne. In making them he used an
ordinary fountain-pen and washed the values in with a brush and waler, using only the ink left on the paper
by the pen. This he has found the most convenient methodfor recording passing effects in line and value.)
