SCALAR. 17

In the background is the other brother turned to front and looking
to r. He wears a <r/i/<2777yy fastened at the r. shoulder. With his r. hand
he holds a fold of the garment, his 1. arm is outstretched and the hand
wide open as if to express wonder. Both brothers have long flowing hair
and are beardless.
(5) Meleager charges to r. with a spear held in both hands, the r.
near the butt, the 1. well up the shaft. He wears a <r^/<2777yy which is
clasped on the r. shoulder and covers the 1. shoulder and arm. It is
spread behind him so as to form a background. He has short hair,
bound with a fillet, and whiskers. At his feet is a hound with shaggy
hair, wearing a collar.
(6) Somewhat to the r. of Meleager in the background is Atalanta,
wearing a tunic, a <r/%/<377zyy twisted round the waist, and boots (cf. Artemis).
She moves to r. and holds in both hands a bow from which she shoots an
arrow at the boar's forehead. The point is apparently piercing his flesh.
Her hair is arranged in the so-called AAA73^77/h'jwr with a tuft at the
back. On her back hangs a quiver with a conical cap and knob on the top.
(7) The Calydonian Boar, of which only the fore quarters are visible,
is turned to 1. with open jaws and a prominent tusk. With his r. paw he
tries to crush a hound which has seized his r. leg.
(8, 9) Behind the boar are two beardless youths, of whom only the
upper parts are visible. The man to the 1. faces to r. and with his r. hand
raises a stone, which he is about to hurl upon the boar. He is nude
except for a r^/a;777yy which is fastened at the 1. shoulder and hangs to the
1. breast. His companion is turned to 1., with his r. hand to his neck.
He is dressed in a r^/<2777yy. Both youths wear
(10) A youth stands in front of the boar's hind quarters with his back
to the spectators, and brandishes in his r. hand a long spear. In his
extended 1. he holds two other spears. He wears a <AA?777y.y over his
shoulders and 1. forearm, and boots.
(11) Below the last, with his head against the other's r. thigh, reclines
a man with short hair and whiskers, who has fallen to the ground. His
r. leg is stretched out, his 1. bent up. On it he rests his r. hand and
supports himself with his 1. He wears a short tunic, which leaves the
breast, r. shoulder, and arms bare.
(12) The scene is closed by a bearded man to front, who is nude
except for a fold of his on the 1. shoulder. He holds in his 1.
hand a spear of which the point is broken away, and rests his r. on his r.
thigh. By his 1. foot is a rabbit which creeps out from a hole and nibbles
at some fruit.
Right End. Atalanta is seated to r., dressed as before, on a high rock.
She has the bow in her 1. hand and the quiver hung from her r. shoulder.
Meleager advances towards her to 1. His spear rests in his 1. hand, his
r. is extended as if in entreaty. He wears a <r/%2772jM.f which is fastened on
the r. shoulder, covers the L, and falls down his back.
Left End. Two men, the first bearded, the other beardless, move to
r. one behind the other, carrying between them a folded hunting-net.
Both wear the and high hunting-sandals which leave the toes bare.
In their r. hand they hold the staves, notched at the top, by which the
nets were secured (crxaAt&s). Between the men a hound runs to r. In
the 1. corner is a pilaster and the spring of an arch.
