H. -48 m. Luna marble. Restored: chin, lips, and nose, the front of the
wreath, end of locks with the hzFMfa from behind the ears, piece of between
shoulder and cheek; piece of r. arm and back of bust plastered; head broken and reset.
Bust of a woman wearing zZzAvz fastened at each shoulder by a round
brooch. Head very slightly turned to the 1. Long oval eyes. Hair parted
and lightly waved to the sides; short curls in front of the ears ; on the head
a heavy wreath of broad-petalled flowers tied at the back with ribbons the
long ends of which are brought to the front on each side from behind the ears
and fall over the breast. From the wreath, probably intended for a Flora.
Very poor copy of an ordinary Greek work of the fourth century.
Apparently a pendant to GTarZ 18.

9. MODERN BUST OF A WOMAN (pi. 19). [Removed in 1924.]
H. .303 m. Luna marble. Unrestored.
On a nude bust, extending to the armpits and breasts, is the head of
a young woman, full face. The bust is placed on a cylindrical pedestal
with the mask of a bearded and horned satyr.
Good work of the later sixteenth century.
Provenance unknown.
Formerly in the Salone. The bust stands on an inscribed plinth
of 1708 (Forcella, i, no. 208).
10. GREEK PORTRAIT HERM (so-called Diogenes) (pi. 18).
H. (head only) -353 m. Greek marble. Restored : nose, ears, r. eyebrow and
eyelid, end of beard, back of head, lower part of herm. Inscription modern.
Head of bearded Greek, with high forehead. Horizontal wrinkles
on forehead, and two vertical wrinkles above nose. The hair leaves the
crown bald. The beard is long and straggling.
Poor Roman copy of a portrait of the third century B.c. The
inscription was already condemned by Ursinus.
From the Vatican (Inv. Boccapaduli, 31); probably bought from
Niccolb Longhi in ig6g (Lanciani, AZrz'%, iii, p. 220), unless it be iden-
tified with a bust which at one time stood in the Villa di Papa Giulio,
and was removed to the Vatican by Pius IV (Ligorio, Thzzr xxiii, p. 76,
cf. Hiilsen, Ao'zzz. ZZ'/A xvi (1901), p. 134). Removed from the Archivio
dell'Agricoltura in 1823 (Tofanelli (1825), p. 149), and placed in the
Stanza dei Fasti (Baedeker (1872), 206).
