9. PORTRAIT BUST OF A GREEK (pi. 23).
H. (with base) -45 m., (bust only) .38 m. Unrestored. Edges of ears broken.
Surface much corroded.
The bust is massive and approaches to the form of a herm extending
to the shoulders (cf. Bienkowski, Anr/z. xxvii (1895), p. 293). On
the h shoulder are the folds of the Az'Tzztz/zbzz. The head, which is turned
slightly to the h, is that of an elderly man ; eyes set close together and
somewhat obliquely ; mouth asymmetrical; forehead broad and much
wrinkled ; hair worked in short locks leaving the crown bald ; lips left free
by the short full beard and by the moustache, which springs from the
nostrils in an unusual manner (Bernoulli).
Poor work of the end of the first century A. D. from an original of the
fourth century B. c. Amelung identifies the head as a portrait of Lysias ;
but see on GaAGAz, no. 2. It has also been referred to as Isocrates
(see Bernoulli, /or. rz7.) but without sufficient reason, since the resemblance
is merely superficial.

10. INSCRIBED HERM OF ANACREON (pi. 24).
H. -545 m. Pentelic marble. Restored : nose.
On an antique herm, inscribed ANAKPEGJN AYPtKOC, with folds
of the ^Aztz/zbzz on each shoulder, the head of Anacreon turned to the r.
and somewhat inclined. The hair, confined by a narrow fillet, is worked
in smooth close-lying curls on the crown and in bold locks in the beard
and over the ears. The moustache is smooth and falls well below the
mouth on each side. The lips are slightly parted, as if the poet were
represented singing, and the upper projects considerably.
Poor work. The discovery of this inscribed herm made it possible
to identify the much-discussed standing figure of a poet, formerly in the
Villa Borghese and now in the Ny-Carlsberg collection, as a portrait of
Anacreon. Replicas of the head exist in the Palazzo Riccardi at Florence,
in Berlin, at Stockholm, and at Glienicke near Potsdam, of which the first
is the most faithful to the original. The style of the work points to the
second half of the fifth century B. c. and it is generally admitted that the
original was the statue mentioned by Pausanias (i. 2g. 1) as standing on
the Acropolis at Athens near the portrait of Xanthippus, the father of
Pericles. The authorship of the original is disputed and the names of
Cresilas and Pheidias have been suggested, but the style of the better
copies cannot be connected closely with either master. The artist must
for the present be nameless.
Found outside Porta Portese in the A/or/z* in February 1884.
