GALLERIA 12-15

12. HEADLESS STATUETTE OF NYMPH (pi. 30).
H.-$8m. Lunamarble. Unrestored.
This small figure has suffered from having been worked in separate
blocks; the head, the arms, and part of the 1. foot have been lost.
What remains is not without grace and interest. The figure, whose form
is girlish, is clad in a double <r/b'Aw, or with sleeves, held
together by a narrow girdie just under the breasts; but over the middle
of the body the extremity of the flutters forward, as if filled by
the wind. She is hurrying forward with her left leg advanced, her right
only touching the ground with its toes.
Perhaps moderate Greek work of the third century B. c.
Provenance unknown.

13. FRAGMENT OF RECTANGULAR COLUMN (pi. 31).
H. (excl. base, which does not belong) .815 m., Br. -08 m., L. .22 m.
Luna marble. Unrestored. Top surface claw-chiselled with shallow diagonal groove
on 1. At top, concave hollows on front and back leading to deep slot in centre.
Fragment of rectangular column. On the slightly concave front
between plain mouldings is an elaborate scroll-pattern of acanthus with
flowers and seeds. Perched on the lowest flower on 1. is a bird (cuckoo ?)
to 1., catching a butterfly. Towards top 1. corner another bird to r.
standing on a leaf and pecking at branch. On r. and 1. sides are reeds,
and on the back a stylized plant with flowers and seeds.
Work of Augustan period or later: a more complete example in the
Lateran Museum (no. 202) shows that it was originally surmounted by
a fantastic composite capital.
Provenance unknown.

14. FRAGMENT OF A DECORATED PILASTER (pi. 31).
H. -79 m., L. .22 m., (short side) -14 m. Luna, marble. Unrestored. A
deep channel is cut into the 1. side, and a similar channel is seen on the back, where
the design is defaced.
The pilaster stands on a plinth. It is decorated on the front with
an ivy plant and berries, on the r. and 1. sides with olive sprays.
Provenance unknown.
15. STATUETTE OF ISIS (pi. 30).
H. 1-13 m. Marble, Unrestored.
The identity of the goddess is attested by the characteristic fringed
dress and the peculiar knot in the mantle on her breast. She stands
dressed in and veil, with her right knee bent, turning her
head slightly to her r.; two curls fall symmetrically down each side of
the cheeks. Most of her 1. arm and the lower part of her r. arm are
missing; the r. forearm was held out at right angles and this hand was
holding an object, the extremity of which rests against her r. shoulder;
it cannot have been a cornucopiae ; but may possibly have been a yyzy/zwz.
The statuette may belong to the first century A. D.
Provenance unknown.
