GALLERIA 36-38

it: !. hind-leg extended backwards, r. foreleg probably extended forwards.
On the back towards its 1. side is a broken surface in the shape of a long
ellipse (with large drill-hole in centre), probably showing the position of
the hunter's knee. On ground to r. behind is the fore-part of a human
sandalled r. foot on tip-toe to 1. The animal's horns are budding, and
this, as well as the fact that the foot is sandalled, makes it probable
that the group represented, not Heracles and the hind, but Artemis.
A;;//. dw;. i (1872), p. 293, no. 58 (where it is expressly stated that the animal's
head was missing).
36 a. SARCOPHAGUS OF FELICITAS AND FELIX (pi. 34).
H. -2 m., L. 1-11 m. Luna marble. Unrestored.
In the centre a cornucopiae is represented. Above it is the inscribed
medallion supported by two winged Erotes wearing rWazzzyzAy and
arranged heraldically; on the r. two others also winged, one carrying
a helmet, the other a sword; on the 1. two others, both seeming to be
pressing against the ground some object like a spear; behind these is
a fir-tree ; the work points to the third century A. D. The lid is adorned
with wreaths stretched between <5zz<rr<37zz'<3.
Found in Via del Babuino.

37. FRAGMENT OF AN ARCHITECTURAL RELIEF (pi. 34).
H. .46 m., L. -8i m. Pentelic marble. Unrestored. Broken surface at each
end.
In front of a wall of rectangular blocks runs an architectural facade.
It consisted apparently of five unequal spaces (of which the two on the
r. are lost), divided from one another by Ionic columns with bases
projecting from a continuous The central space is surmounted
by a triangular pediment, filled with a relief now badly defaced. The
space on the extreme 1. (to which one on the r., now missing, presumably
corresponded) has a segmental pediment, the relief of which is likewise
indecipherable, while the present central space (with the missing one on
the r.) was surmounted only by the line of entablature that runs through
the fapade from end to end.
Perhaps an imitation of a stage-building (Aru^zzzyyp<?zzy), cf. the relief
in the Museo delle Terme, Helbig^, 1264; Dorpfeld and Reisch, ZDy
^rzhr/zzyrA? pp. 333 fh, fig. 84; Bieber, Zbzz/f/zzd'Ar azz/zz
zuyyzvz, p. 76, pi. xl.
In the present instance, however, there is no indication of any doors,
but each of the sections between the columns is filled by a projecting
panel, perhaps once painted. First or second century A. D.
Gift of Signor D. Costanzi.
A;;//. (Aw;, i. (1872-3), p. 30.

rock.
Dorsal and ventral shields carefully worked. Naturalistic animal
