70 a. FRAGMENT OF RELIEF WITH (pi. 40).
H. (highest point) .52 m., Br. 1-0$ m. Luna, marble. Unrestored. Of the
near horse all except head and 1. foreleg from below knee remains; of second, hind-
legs, chest, and 1. foreleg except hoof; of third and fourth, the lower part of the
hindlegs from above and below hocks respectively.
(Azaz/rz^oz with lower part of charioteer's drapery. On the ground
to 1. is a bare human 1. foot on tiptoe to 1. The drapery closely resembles
that on the chariot-frieze of the Mausoleum; the horses are of similar
build and style. At the same time the relief cannot be considered a copy
of any surviving part of that building : not only is the direction of the
chariot reversed and a figure on foot introduced, but the scale is smaller
and the drawing less spirited. The execution is, however, vigorous. The
charioteer and marshal are probably to be identified as Helios and
Phosphoros or Phaethon. For discussion see on the companion relief
Gzz/Arz'zz, no. 39 a. The originals were probably votive offerings in the
shrine of Helios and Eos, to whose respective functions the gait of the
horses is in each case suitable.
Found on the Esquiline.
./?%//. C<wz. iii (1875), p. 247, no. 6.
71. STATUE OF A BOY RESTORED WITH FEMALE HEAD
(pi. 42).
H. (excl. plinth and restoration) 1-255 nr. Parian marble. Restored (in marble) :
plinth and support ; (in plaster) : neck and head, r. foot with ankle, 1. leg from
below knee to below ankle. Smaller patches elsewhere. Missing : 1. arm from above
elbow, r. arm from shoulder (a dowel-hole in the stump of each). Traces of red
colour on and about girdle.
Boy standing with both feet firmly on the ground, weight on r. leg,
1. knee slightly bent. The r. arm, for which there is no trace of a
/)?z7zA//o, was not pressed against the side; the 1. arm hangs dowmwards.
The dress is an z'rtwzzy (not the eTepo/Mo-xaAos of Pollux, vii. 47) with
seam on 1. shoulder, unfastened on r. shoulder, with corners hanging
down at back and front; hem of front corner and of lower edge marked by
an incised line. The narrow girdle which surrounds the hips is half con-
cealed by a slight overfall. Laced boots exposing the toes reach to the
bottom of the calf and have a bow at top and another level with the ankle.
A similar but not identical statue in the Vatican is thought by
Amelung (Hz/. Crz/. GG/7. Zzz^z'A, no. gi) to represent a hunter. But the
^ozzzziy with only slight differences is worn not only by hunters, but
also by slaves, workmen, and others (cf. Gzz//. no. 20). The dress and
high boots which led the restorer to add, incorrectly, an Amazon head,
may even be compared with those worn by the Eleusinian acolyte on a
sarcophagus (Rizzo, /?<)'zzz. .TA7/. xxv (1910), p. 143, pis. ii and iv), and
the statue itself has points in common with (Az//. no. 69. The original
may date from the end of the fifth century.
The present dull copy is of uncertain date.
Provenance unknown.
72. SEPULCHRAL STATUE OF P. NUMMIUS BASSUS (pi. 42).
H. (without base) 1-94 m., (with base) 2-2601. Marble, Unrestored:
the r. foot and part of plinth broken away.
Elderly beardless man standing with weight on 1. leg and r. drawn
