28. HEAD OF BOY (GORDIAN III?) (pi. 84).
H. -28 m. (excl. restoration). Pentelic marble. Restored (in plaster) : tip of
nose, bust.
The hair is blocked out in relief and then merely pitted with short
chisel strokes at irregular intervals; the brows are also incised. The
eyes are rendered by a bean-shaped segment within a circle, and the gaze
is directed upward to 1. The closed mouth is small and well formed;
the ears thick and coarsely treated. The head, which is that of a boy of
about thirteen or fourteen, has been identified as Gordian III, and the
features and long slender neck bear a close resemblance to his head on
the coins. In any case it is an excellent portrait of the first half of the
third century A. D., the work being good and careful.
Found in 1874 in the Via Mamiani on the Esquiline.

29. MUSE (?) (pi. 85).
H. -72 m. Pentelic marble. Restored : head, r. hand and wrist, 1. wrist, r.
foot, 1. foot, and most of rock and of lower edge of drapery.
The figure stands with weight on r. foot, 1. foot raised on a rock and
the arms, crossed r. above 1., resting on the raised knee. The body is bent
forward from the waist, and the head is wrongly restored—with inclina-
tion too much downward and over r. shoulder. An /2Z77M/A72 is draped
round the lower limbs and caught up on the knee, leaving the upper part
of the body nude.
The pose is similar to that of the Muse, preserved in several
examples, the best known of which is the Melpomene in the Vatican
(Clarac, 313, 1044, p. 268 R; HelbigS, 267). It is to be noticed that the
sculptor of our statue has changed the drapery so as to leave the figure
half nude and has removed the attributes, so that the Muse of Tragedy
cannot have been represented. Poor work of the second century A. D.,
resembling that of the other statuette in this room.

30. BUST OF ELDER FAUSTINA (pi. 85).
H. .41 m. Marble, Head broken and reset. Restored (in plaster) :
nose, both ears.
The head is turned slightly to 1. The hair is parted, waved back,
and arranged in a coronet of braids upon the crown. There is very
little modelling in the face; the lids are heavy; the iris and pupils indi-
cated by a bean-shaped depression within an incised arc. The bust is
draped in a garment with many small folds, fastened by a button on
the r. shoulder, but leaving the 1. shoulder bare.
This portrait of Faustina the Elder seems to form one of a series
which includes the Capitoline example (Aw/WW^H, no. 36, vol. i, p. 197),
all having the same dimensions and differing only in details.
