GIARDINO 19-23 a

19. BUST OF ARIADNE (?) (pi. 91).
H. -gi m. Parian marbie. Restored: nose, patch on chin, back of head and
neck, bust. The inscription ARIADNA is modern.
On a modern draped bust the head of Ariadne (?) turned slightly to r.
The hair is confined by a broad fillet on the forehead and by an ivy-
wreath, of which the greater part is modern. Ringlets and the ribbons
of the fillet fall behind the ears. The lips are parted.
Poor work after an original of the fourth century B. c.
Unnamed in early inventories (Stanza, g); 'Ariadne' Inv. 1729;
Tofanelli (1818), p. 137 (Stanza del Trono), 'Ariadne'.

20 and 20 a. TOES OF COLOSSAL L. FOOT (pi. 99).
L. (20) -245 m., (20 %) .29 m. Coarse Parian marble. Unrestored. 20 % is
cracked,
* (20) Great and second toes with traces of the fastening of the
sandal between them. (200:) Third and fourth toes with portion of the
sandal. The sandal strap is adorned with bosses at regular intervals.
Found in 1879 near the Piazza di Trevi and presented by Cav.
Augusto Castellani.

21. TORSO OF HERACLES (pi. 92).
H. -55 m. Parian marble. Unrestored. The statue has never received its
final surface.
Torso of nude Heracles with remains of lion's skin under 1. arm and
of club (?) behind r. thigh. The r. arm is broken at the shoulder, the
1. above the elbow, the r. leg at the knee, and the 1. below the groin.
Poor copy, perhaps of the weary Heracles of Lysippus : the muscu-
lature is less exaggerated than in the Farnese Heracles at Naples (cf.
no. 2g).

22. FRAGMENT OF SEATED FIGURE (pi. 92).
H. -56 m., L. .44 m. Parian marble.
Fragment of relief with draped legs of a figure seated in a chair, the
seat of which is decorated with a lion's mask on the side which is visible :
above it are the remains of a 1. hand holding a roll.
