45. FRAGMENT OF RELIEF WITH MAN IN 7F<A4 (ph 93).

A small fragment of a relief with the headless upper part of a man
in tunic and toga, holding his r. arm across his breast. The hand is
defaced. Below the relief is the inscription (omitted in C. A Z.):
M-AEMtUVS LEPtD
NEOPTOLEMVS
Style and epigraphy alike point to latter half of second century A. D.

46. HEAD AND TORSO OF ZEUS (?) (pi. 93).
H. *40 in. Pentelic marble. Unrestored.
The head looks to 1. and has long curling hair falling over ears
and neck and traces of a fillet above the curls. Short beard and mous-
tache. Body spare and muscular. Arms broken at the shoulders and
the body below the navel. The expression of the face is mild, and the
head bears a resemblance to that from Melos in the British Museum
and, like the Melian head, might represent either Zeus or Asclepius.
Ordinary Roman copy from an original of the late fourth or early
third century B. c.
Found in a medieval wall on the line of the Via Cavour, near
S. Maria dei Monti.

A small fragment of a draped female figure, wearing necklace, tunic,
and mantle which she holds with the r. hand. Below is the inscription:
(de)VM METVENS H1C S)TA.
which is taken to be Jewish by Htilsen in C. Z Z.
Found on the Quirinal, on the site of the Baths of Constantine.
