hanging locks in front and zzztzz/z'zzr on the head (cf. Mezz. Arc., no. 37). The
hair is freely drilled, and the pupils are incised. The copy is of
Antonine date, and is a good one, which preserves the impressionist
character attributed to the original by Bryaxis (especially in the rendering
of the eyes) better than most late copies.
Found on the Esquiline near S. Martino ai Monti, in the same

in the shrine, cf. A?2z//. Cow., /or. rz'/., pi. IV.)

5 a. IDEAL BUST OF YOUTH (in round niche) (pi. 103).
H. (head only) -27 m., (with bnst) -39 m. Marble, (head) (bust)
Luna. Restored : nose, edge of 1. ear, patches on wreath. The bust is antique but
does not belong. It has been broken in several pieces and put together.
The bust is nude but for a mantle which is thrown over the back
and shows over the shoulders.
On the bust is set the wreathed head of a youth to r. He has
regular features and a prominent bar above the forehead. His hair is
arranged in short locks.
Poor, rough copy of a work probably of the Peloponnesian school
of the early fourth century B. c.
Provenance unknown.
6. BUST OF YOUTH (pi. 104).
H. -33 m., face only -213 m. Pentelic marble. Restored : greater part of nose,
back of head from behind 1. ear and r. side as far as the split on the r. cheek. Long
split on the 1. cheek near the nose. R. forearm of bust.
Head of youth to front, with hair arranged in close curls falling low
on the forehead. The head is much restored and has been greatly
injured by cleaning; it is closely related to the well-known Riccardi head
in Florence (Brunn-Bruckmann, pi. 361), but it is probably not a
replica. In any case it represents a work of Myron or of his circle.
The bust is placed on a pedestal with an inscription of 1678 which
once stood in the Stanza delle Oche, and supported a bust of Hadrian or
Galba* (cf. no. 4, Forcella, i. 171).

and a Latin cross below it, which were added at a later date. The
