26. SMALL DISK WITH RELIEF (not illustrated).
Diam. -06 m. Much corroded.
The relief shows the infant Dionysus astride a goat, who faces r.
The child, who appears to wear a mantle, grasps the creature's mane
with his 1. hand, whilst with his r. he holds a long thyrsos, the end
damaged. The edge of the disk is adorned with an egg moulding.
The motive, employed alike for Dionysus and Cupids, was common in
Rome both in statuary and on coins; cf. GCA., no. 46.
Found in 1872 on the Esquiline.

The brows are knit, the mouth open. Below the oyxos triple
ringlets fall on either side of the neck.

28. MEDALLION BUST OF WARRIOR (pi. 117).
H. -17 m. An attachment of furniture. From the back protrudes an iron nail
to fasten the bust to the piece of furniture, and just below the back of the neck from
shoulder to shoulder is a semicircular ' collar'.
The drapery is drawn round the bust, leaving both shoulders and
breast bare. The head is turned to the 1., and across the chest over the
r. shoulder passes the sword-belt, with the sword attached, which is
grasped by the r. hand. He wears the .gtzAa adorned with volutes gnd
upturned cheek-pieces, and a neck-piece over the nape. The crest,
supported by a cone, consists of a double row of eagle's feathers fastened
into a rim. Under the helmet the hair is visible in two rows of curls,
and behind it is indicated by incised lines. The features are rough,
with little expression; the eyes are inlaid. The work is poor. The
bust has been thought to represent the enraged Achilles preparing to
strike Agamemnon.

29. SILVER STATUETTE OF A YOUTH (pi. 115).
H. (without base) -232 m. Base does not belong. Restored (in plaster): patch
on top of head, with lock of hair : part of r. upper arm. The head has been broken
off at the base of neck and reset.
The nude youth stands with both feet planted firmly on the
ground. His hair is arranged in vertical locks over the forehead, and
