GALLERIA SUPERIORE IH. 36-39

36. SMALL BUST OF AN EMPEROR (pi. 118).
H. *065 m. (without base). In a very fragmentary state, the back and a great
part of the neck repaired with plaster. Gilded bronze.
It represents an emperor, clean-shaven, draped in a mantle fastened
upon the r. shoulder with a large brooch. The hair, treated very simply
in lines radiating from the crown, is encircled by a diadem of medallions
alternately square and round, tied behind with falling ribbons.
Third-century work, perhaps a portrait of Constantine, but identi-
fication is impossible.
37. GOAT (pi. 118).
H. - ig m. On a. wooden base which does not belong.
A bearded goat with long upstanding horns. The advanced r. fore-
leg is broken off below the knee; otherwise it is well preserved. The
modelling is good. The hair is not indicated on the body, with the
exception of a broad stripe down the spine with fine incised lines raying
out on either side, a tuft of hair on the neck below the chin, and the
beard, which is also treated in the same way with incised lines. An
almost identical goat is in the museum at Bvreux (Reinach, ii. 751. 3)
and another at Boston (Reinach, iv. 313. 4).
Found in 1874 on the site of the Praetorian Camp.
AW/. (Aw;. ii (1874), p. 301, no. ig.
38. STATUETTE OF SEATED CHILD (pi. 118).
H. (with base) -o6g m., (without base) -043 m. A round hole runs through the
front of the base; back side damaged.
A young child is seated on a rectangular base, his feet crossed in
front, his head turned to r. With both hands he clasps against his
shoulder what appears to be a bird, the mark of its head remaining
above the r. hand. The statuette is not identical with any of the variants
of the scheme known as ' the boy with the goose' (see E. Gardner in
y. A/. A. vi (1885), pp. 1 ff.), derived from the work of Boethus; but it
is equally a subject, probably adapted from that type, and here
representing a child with his pet bird (duck ?).
Poor work.
Found in 1889 in the Via di Sta. Maria Maggiore.
AW/. (Aw;, xvii (1889), pp. 402, goi; AW. -SAzz'., 1889, p. 27 r.
39. STATUETTE OF ABUNDANTIA (pi. 118).
She is clad in a long with and zrapu^zj; the feet
seem covered with pointed shoes. The r., with extended forearm, holds
the the 1. a large cornucopiae which leans against the shoulder.
The forms of the body are indicated below the drapery.
Rough work.
Found in the Via Cavour in 1889.
A*;;//. (Awz. xvii ([889), p. goi ; AW. Araz*., 1889, p. 222.
